Phantom Kidding

The following occurred here in 2000. Mimi, named after the character from the Drew Carey show as she was so tiny when born, was due to kid in 10 days time. She was in the "Springers" pen and around her were several goats in the process of kidding. Mimi is a dark brown goat as is Nefertiti but most of the kids born here are white as I have only Saanen bucks. Nefertiti gave birth to twins at about 2pm and all was well.

Next morning I discovered that Mimi had apparently kidded overnight and had a single coloured buck kid. I was a bit surprised that the kid was strong and well being born early and I remember I checked under Mimi's tail and saw something there that indicated she must have kidded. I don't remember what I saw, just that I believed the kid to be hers. No one else appeared to have kidded. So Mimi became part of the milking herd but I was disappointed in the amount of milk she was giving - not up to her usual standard.

Imagine my surprise to go get the milkers before an afternoon milking 10 days later and discover Mimi with a new born wet, white doe kid. My first reaction was that this kid had remained inside since the last kid was born and I was quite astounded to think that a goat could go 10 days between delivering twins. Not possilbe, no way, I'm thinking and then the light bulb came on. Ahhh, this is her kidding now and the last kid could only have belonged to Nefertiti. A quick defrost of some good colostrum and Mimi's doe is healthy and well, however...

I named Mimi's kid, Millie. Millie is like some of those humans who always have things go wrong. Late in her first pregnancy we found her with a hole in her side with fat protruding, it was pretty gross. We also discovered some fat on a bolt that was slightly protruding from a wooden gate. She must have run or been pushed into it. A course of antibiotics and the wound healed and she kidded with no problems but...

About a month after kidding, Millie entered the bales one afternoon and somehow managed to slip backwards and down through the bales into the pit. In the process she tore open a teat quite badly but not down to the milk. More antibiotics and the teat healed up with barely a scar but it is still bent to this day.
